Self Exam

Breast self exam (BSE) is important in health maintenance. Regular monthly self exams can detect a breast cancer at an earlier stage. BSE should be performed at the same time every month, within one week after a menstrual period. For postmenopausal women, the BSE should be done at the same time each month.

The exam should consist of a visual check in a mirror. You should look for changes in the skin or nipples (dimpling, discoloration, flaking or thickening). While looking in the mirror, place your hands on your hips and then raise your hands over your head. Watch for indentation or other differences between the two breasts that appear new.

While standing, feel for lumps under the armpit area and just over the collarbone. These are areas where lymph nodes are located.

The palpation (feeling) of the breast should be done when lying down.

There are several techniques for feeling the breast tissue. The most important part is to make sure the entire breast is examined, including the tail of the breast which points toward the shoulder.

Any abnormality should be reported to your doctor.
