Treatment

To the left of the page you will see the many treatment options for breast cancer including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. Most patients do not require all of these treatments. You and your physician will meet to discuss your diagnosis and treatment options. Below are some questions you may want to ask your doctor concerning treatments:

  • What kind of breast cancer do I have?
  • What stage is my disease?
  • Are the lymph nodes involved?
  • How aggressive is the tumor?
  • What is the recommended treatment plan?
If you do not understand the treatment plan, talk with your doctor some more to get a better understanding.
  • What type of surgery is recommended?
  • Is breast conserving surgery and option for me?
  • Will there be additional cancer treatments after surgery that are recommended (such as radiation or chemotherapy)?
  • Are there any post-surgical exercises recommended?
  • If lymph nodes were removed during surgery, were any found to have cancer? If so, how many?
  • Was the tumor positive for estrogen receptors or progesterone receptors?
  • If I am having breast reconstruction, when will this be done?
  • If I am having chemotherapy:
    • What chemotherapy regimen will be used to treat the breast cancer?
    • How long will it be given?
    • What are the side effects?
    • Can normal activities be maintained without too much fatigue?
  • Is a hormone therapy such as tamoxifin recommended?
  • After treatment, which doctors need to have continued follow-up? How often? For how long (two years, five years, etc.)?
